Born in 1979 in Norway, Nina K. Ekman grew up surrounded by the wild landscapes of northern Norway, shaping her deep connection to nature. But her work goes beyond personal experience—it’s an exploration of how nature and humanity interact. 🌱

🧶 Using the tufting technique, Nina transforms recycled textiles and deadstock materials into vibrant, sculptural plants. While tufting is traditionally linked to carpet weaving, for Nina, it becomes a playful yet urgent medium—bringing sustainability and circularity to the forefront of her practice.

🌴 Her magical, soft, and colorful plants explore the paradoxes of modern life, creating comforting worlds that offer both escape and reflection on the preservation of our planet.

ZⓈONAMACO MÉXICO ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO is a dedicated space for contemporary art, featuring internationally renowned galleries.

Meanwhile, Nina’s work "COP - Conference of Plants" is was on view at Institut français du Danemark. Nearly 50 plants and trees have gathered in the Music Salon at The Thott Palais—woven into tapestries, gilded floral foliage, and musical instruments. Cacti, Strelitzia, Birch, Palm, Plane, and Joshua trees, each from distant habitats, now find themselves rooted in Kongens Nytorv. A yellow monster lurks nearby, mouth wide open—hungry? Loud? But the trees stand abundant. Are they demonstrating? Mourning? Or perhaps about to sing: Imagine all the plants… living life in peace… 🌱🎶 ✨ Part of CARTE VERTE, where 7 French and Danish artists take over the French Embassy.

@institutfrancaisdk 🌵🌸 Næsten 50 planter og træer har samlet sig i Musiksalonen, blandt gobeliner, forgyldte ornamenter og musikinstrumenter. Kaktusser, paradisblomster, palmer, birke- og Joshuatræer, som alle stammer fra en bred vifte af levesteder rundt om i verden, vokser pludselig her i det Thottske Palæ på Kongens Nytorv. Et gult monster lurer rundt med åben mund og ser grådig og brølende ud. Men alligevel vokser træerne og planterne her i overflod. Og hvad laver de egentlig? Demonstrerer de? Sørger de? Eller måske er de bare ved at synge den berømte sang: “Imagine all the plants… Living life in peace…“.

🎨 Nina K. Ekman er en norsk billedkunstner, født i 1979 og bosat i København. Forbindelsen hun har til naturen er dybt forankret i de vilde landskaber i det nordlige Norge, som dannede baggrund for hendes barndom. Dette forhold til naturen går dog ud over et simpelt personligt kald; det repræsenterer en udforskning af den rolle, som naturen spiller for menneskeheden og omvendt.

🧶 Nina bruger tufting-teknikken til at skabe tekstilskulpturer. Selvom teknikken normalt forbindes med tæppevævning, bliver den for Nina en legende måde at skabe unikke værker med en distinkt karakter. Bæredygtighed og cirkularitet spiller også en central rolle i hendes produktion. Hun bruger nemlig genbrugstøj og rester fra tekstilindustrien til at skabe sine værker.

🌴 Ninas arbejde drejer sig om det presserende og det uundgåelige : det moderne livs dilemmaer og paradokser, samt bevarelsen af vores planet. Med sine magiske, bløde og farverige planter skaber kunstneren trøstende verdener, der tilbyder en flugt fra vores tids udfordringer.

What a fantastic week in Copenhagen- smooth installation with the amazing team @institutfrancaisdk, @france.danemark, the talented curator @natkagutman and the amazing helpers, Victor Charlotte and Charlotte @budtzbendix and off course the wonderful artists. I feel so honored to be part of this french/danish curated exhibition and to be invited to exhibit at the Thott Palace. Thank you all for coming to the opening and Kulturnatten- I was so lucky to be able to see so many of you and show you my work.

🇫🇷 Institut français and the French Embassy invite you to a contemporary art exhibition in the beautiful Thott Palace, a 17th century architectural jewel that is currently home to the Embassy.

🎨 7 French and Danish contemporary artists have been invited to exhibit in the ancient reception rooms of the palace that from 11-31 of October will be completely transformed by a series of eye-catching and site-specific installations.

👩‍🎨 The represented artists are Tiphaine Calmettes, Valentine Huyghues-Despointes, Nina K Ekman, Maria Koshenkova, Edith Meusnier, Prune Nourry and Charlotte Thrane. The exhibition has been curated by Natalia Gutman.

🌍 ‘Carte Verte’ addresses one of the biggest challenges of our time, the green transition. The artists explore themes such as overconsumption, global warming and ocean pollution with works that are both utopian and dystopian. Several of the artists have worked with recycled materials such as old mattresses, yarn scraps and glass bottles.

The exhibition is free to visit and can be entered every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 16-31 of October between 3pm-7pm. The visit must be pre-booked via billetto see link in 🔗 i bio.

@yiweigallery Studio Visit with Nina K Ekman. New show opening at Yiwei Gallery on August 31st 💚

Ekman is a Norwegian visual artist, living and working in Copenhagen, Denmark and Palo Alto, California.

Ekman’s work floats between paint and textiles, sculptures and etchings, and she is always experimenting with ways to stretch and challenge her own use of the media. Most recently Ekman has been drawn by the technique of tufting as a way of building textile sculptures. Tufting is a method of weaving carpets, but to Ekman tufting has become a playful opportunity to create singular pieces with an original appearance.
